This past week 7:30’s very own T.L.S. got on the phone to have an exclusive interview with Sophila Kasukumya, so she can give us an insight of the modeling industry....

T.L.S. –When & why did u become interested in a modeling career?

SOPHILA –I was in the seventh grade when I took part in my first modeling pageant at my school, I was always the tallest in my class and always felt awkward, my friends actually pushed me to try it cause they had faith in me that I did not have, so I gave it a try and vwala I loved it, started watching so many modeling TV shows and looked up to Cynthia Kanyema as my source of inspiration…

From then I have strived and pushed to do my very best though sometimes I may crumble I keep going on because I believe that in order to get to where I wanna go imma have to face some challenges

T.L.S.  –Tell us about your education? What languages do you speak? Have you attended fashion modeling courses/what courses have you taken?

SOPHILA –I did my primary in Zambia & went on to do my high school in Zimbabwe, where my passion for modeling took the next step, I am a fluent English speaker…I speak Bemba too…

T.L.S. –What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progress in this field?

SOPHILA –Seeing that modeling isn’t to par as in the western countries, I hope to create a platform that will help society appreciate the decency of modeling…

T.L.S. –What is your nutrition? How far do you go to the gym?

SOPHILA –Hahaha can I lie there??

T.L.S.-You can try..

SOPHILA –LoL...Well ummm, I start my day with cereal then a slightly heavy lunch which always has to be a balanced diet, then later in the evening I help myself with some light dinner, I jog four times a week…I take a glass of water every morning too.

T.L.S. –What are your dislikes & likes?

SOPHILA –Well I am no fan of judgmental people, especially people out there to point at your mistakes whilst forgetting to look into the mirror…failures…definitely hate the devil lol…the heat…I dislike liars…

I am definitely a fan of peace, cause peace is not only the greatest feeling but also determines the amount of progress one will make…I  like the cold, good for skin LoL…like making friends… music & obviously modeling

T.L.S. –It is often said that a model should have a good personality. According to you, what are the traits required for a good personality?

SOPHILA –I personally think it all starts with the heart, a pure humble loving heart is your basic good personality, because then one watches out not for their own well being but for others also…

SOPHILA –Lol really??

T.L.S. – Anyways next question, do you think that your hair should also complement your attire or do you think that it is ok to go around with the same kind of hair style to different places and with different types of clothes?

SOPHILA –Well I think that hair styles are to compliment your fashion sense it’s important because fashion tells a story and hair is part of it…

SOPHILA –LoL…the question I dislike, umm ok, except the fact that I have excelled in my school, I have managed to take part in several charitable organizations such as the junior council, which have enabled me to assist where I can, I have also proudly participated in different pageants that have created a platform for me to speak out for my fellow youths...

T.L.S. –What advice would you give to new comers in the modeling industry?

SOPHILA –Without sugar coating I would advise them to say the industry requires not only beauty but brains also to go along with it so they should be informed…it’s not that easy it’s a tough industry that requires hard work and commitment, it’s like any mere job except a lil’ flexible, be strong determined and see you at the top..

T.L.S. –What can be the worst nightmare in the modeling industry? 
 SOPHILA –Ummm not being able to a successful and productive model…

T.L.S. –Finally what do think of 7:30 apparel?

SOPHILA –Okay so besides 7:30 being the best at what it does with its distinguishing attributes that makes its brand stand out from several others, I also think it is a fantastic guide to everyone that needs the latest and sickest fashion advice…

How did you get your name?

Well my name actually came to me back in 2003, at primary school, I used to rap a lot and stuff that didn’t really have meaning, but a guy I knew at that time who also is a rapper said I had something in me and in due time I will probably be a good artist, so he just started calling me gifted, then renamed it to young gifted..

When did your career in music start

My music career started in 2006, at high school, we used to just rap for fun, but I finally started recording…

From your songs which one is your favorite?

My favorite song is dear moma, coz its got a lot of personal feeling in it..

 If you could collabo with anyone, who would it be and why?

Well locally or from Zimbabwe I think carlprit, and internationally I think Florida, coz im kinda more into party/dance-electro, and the fussion of hip-hop and dance iz a trendy and amazing, what can I say I love to party. hahaha

We all know you can spit what we want to know is can u sing?

I’m learning hey, and ill also be doing a bit of singing, with auto tune of course..

What projects are you currently working on?

Well I recently finished recording  my 1st mixtape “I AM GIFTED,” and when it comes out, I will be working on a new mixtape, which has a lot more Christian/gospel tracks, coz I always want to be in line with my  Christian roots…

Well... mentor. I don’t know. Most of my inspiration comes from my mother, and how much I want to make her proud…

I moved around a lot, but I grew up mostly in Mabvuku

What advice would u give to new comers?

I guess all I can say is never give up on your dreams and pray coz nothing comes without the hand of God.

How do feel you differ from rest of the music industry?

I feel different is adventure, plus I like being different from the rest oit makes you outstanding, I guess I just wanna be…unique

How do you balance your music with other obligations?

I just make time, I believe time management is important and shows some sort of direction. I manage to have enough time through time through it all…just by creating a balance

What has been the worst nightmare for you & how did you get through

I can say not having a place to record and not having the right people to help me, and when I managed to get signed by amvis, it kinda changed coz they know the type of sound I need, and they have helped through some stuff… It’s been a great experience

 If you could categorize your music, what genre would it best fit?

Well I’m an all rounder but I’m more into dance/electro pop/hiphop

How did you get your name?

Well my names are Shannon Tanaka Kennedy Nyajeka. So it’s pretty obvious how I came up with my rap moniker, but people have always called me different names. When my skills elevated they called me the Don. I guess that’s where I got the name T-Shan Donne

When did your career in music start?

Well I started recording in 2009 so I guess since then I’ve been between battles, freestyle, poetry sessions, and shows. “Real Rap life”

From your songs which one is your favorite?

I’d say Top floor although my song Ciroc and Rolla got 2500 downloads, Top Floor is the realest to me

If you could collabo with anyone, who would it be and why?

King Pin or Ishy X those are the only Zim rappers I feel are ill enough to be on a Track with me. Although I’m  working with a lotta other Zim Rappers, namely Amvis, TYREXx, Rehab artists, and mixmasters artists, Rappers like breezy are pretty ill too glad to be workin with.

We know u can spit but what we don’t know can u sing lol?

I’m terrible lol, I can harmonize sometimes. Imma good songwriter though, I write R&B, Soul, Rock, Alternative and Pop music.

What projects are you currently working on?

Well since ive been Signed to a record label called Ghetto Rough, with artists like Da Les, and Zola and Bongani Fassie and L-Tido who have also been signed to the label, im working on a Mixtape.

I dreamt I died without living my dream. I got through it by living like it is that day.

My rap and stage name is Koffee Baby lol… Jus Koffee is fine my birth name is Tinotenda Nyasha Maveneka     

How did you get your name?

My mom gave me my real name lol… but I got Koffee from a punch line and ever since I fell in love with it…. Like I said on go hard Koffee on my mind coz I Grind so fine

When did your career in music start

When did I start recording and rapping??? Three years ago when did I Start producing??? 5 years ago when did I start singing??? 14 years ago so my music career has existed for years but I started taking it as a business this year.

What do you think of your team Checkmate and Tapstar?

GOD blessed me with two most loyal men I could ever ask for to make my passion for music turn into a successful career. These men are the future of world music from Checkmate’s insane delivery to Tapstar’s mind provoking bars. They are a real challenge to compete with on any track and great people to be around. I love my team.

From your songs which one is your favorite?

At the moment it’s our new mixtape songs fly and drop it low… but of all time my favourite song will always be Man of the year our 1^st song the one that began my crew and gave us this new mentality that we can do this…

Who is your favourite collaboration besides of course 4 Kornerz??

It’s a hard choice… In terms of verses and rap I would pick Karma or K. yung then there are the singers Elliot, Millz and Fungie they all came through they are all amazing people and talented artists ….  But I would have to say Kripmac is the best.

If you could collabo with anyone, who would it be and why?

Collaborations hmmm I would pick Michael Jackson he was a music legend and I was a big fan… this would be an odd combination a rapper and a singer but it would be the greatest collaboration of my life.

We all know you can spit what we want to know is can u sing? Hahaha… I can sing jus not an amazing one on the mike but I will learn to replicate it eventually

What projects are you currently working on?

Well we just finished recording our mixtape Taking off That’s coming out on the 9^th of February so right now we are doing a lot of singles and collaborations with other artists from all over the world USA North African artists South African artists and our Zimbabwe rap family. This is how we are preparing for our upcoming album

Did you have a mentor for your career?

My mom and dad. It seems like an odd choice since my parents are not at all musically gifted but it’s their principals that inspire me. My mom and dad both came from poor families and worked very hard to get to the stage they are. They looked after all of us and taught me how to work for my dreams. No other people on earth could do what they did so I got to do my best for them.

So what part of h town did you grow up in?

I grew up in Mandara, the hood I believe which was made for great musicians like Checkmate, Tapstar and myself Koffee, Kripmac, Slasha and K Young, T shan, Slim, Vad3r, Thabo Kombo etc… I think we are the next best thing to Brooklyn

Do you get nervous during performances?

 I used to but I’m kind of getting used to it… I have done a lot of performances now so it’s not nerve wrecking anymore.

What advice would u give to new comers?

Go Hard or go home

How do feel you differ from rest of the music industry?

We differ in our aims. Most musicians tend to want to stay in a specific genre and culture of music where as we aim to break out into other genres and cultures of music and bring an understanding to world. We want to join the “4 Kornerz” of the world together through our music hence the name 4 Kornerz lol.

How do you balance your music with other obligations?

I won’t lie its hard but it’s about planning and preparing well in advance so that my education does not suffer. As for the group we record in seasons when we can and no one is interrupted or disturbed by music during intense school or university time

So far what has been the proudest moment of your career?

I don’t know I could say the website or the mixtape or the newspaper article or TV but the proudest moment for me as a member of 4K was the way we survived. We saw a lot of crews who were high flying all fall to pieces while we struggled to stay together. In the end most of those crews fell apart but we stuck it through and kept going. I’m really proud of Checkmate and Tapstar for sticking through it all.

What is the furthest show you have done from home?

My furthest show was in Bulawayo. 4k has always been close to home

What has been the worst nightmare for you & how did you get through

Dying a financial failure and disappointing my parents… I work harder that’s how I deal with it

 If you could categorize your music, what genre would you it best fit?

I would make a new genre called Universal... Name speaks for itself

What I Think of 7:30 and T.L.S??? For someone who has been working so hard and trying so much it’s so amazing to see him and his fashion line on the rise. He represents what the new generation of our world and our continent needs to be. Hard working and full of ambition to succeed. As for his gear its nice I would buy that… but I hope I get one for free you know coz I’m Koffee…

MOKOOMBA stems from the deepest respect that the tonga people have for the Zambezi river and for th vibrant life that it brings to their musicand culture

How did the band get their name?
The word Mokoomba is a concept. It signifies the Zambezi River as the vibrant source of life for the Tonga people and our culture as our provider of food, water and recreation.
        
When did your career in music start?
The band was formed in 2007 and in 2008 we were lucky to win the Music Crossroads Competition in Zimbabwe and went on to compete regionally with the best bands of other Southern African countries (Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique). We came first there also. The grand prize was a European tour, an opportunity to record our first six-track album Kweseka (Drifting Ahead).

From your songs which one is your favorite?
It’s a difficult question because as band, we love all the songs.

If you could collabo with anyone, who would it be and why?
We have done a highly successful collaboration with DJ Gregor Salto from the Netherlands and I think we are open to work with any band or artist that is keen on developing something new and interesting. 





What projects are you currently working on?
We are planning a few local, regional and international performances before the year 2012 ends. We will announce as soon as all is in place.

Did you have a mentor for your career? If yes who? What did they benefit your career
We have had a lot of help in different aspects of our career so far and for that we would like to thank the late Alfred Mjimba, Mathias Bangure, Poney Gross, Manou Gallo and Marcus Gora.

What is you biggest inspiration to follow and keep following in music?
Our biggest inspiration is the audiences that we meet and perform for everywhere we go. It is such a rich experience to create music and an even better one to see people enjoy and be touched by it.


 Do you perform in public describe those occasions?
We perform at concerts and festivals in Zimbabwe and internationally. We also hold music and cultural exchange workshops in schools when we travel to other countries.

 So what part of zim did you all grow up in?
Victoria Falls and Binga

Do you get nervous during performances?
Like any young musician, we used to get nervous when we started out but now that we have a lot of experience playing in many different settings, we no longer get nervous

 What advice would u give to new comers?
Be yourself and be unique, the world is hungry for something fresh and that is the only way you are going to be taken seriously as a new act.

How do feel you differ from rest of the music industry?
Mokoomba’s music is different from the rest of the music being produced in Zimbabwe because it has its roots in the Tonga and other cultures close to the Zambezi River and secondly the band has talented individuals, always experimenting in order to create new sounds.

How do you balance your music with other obligations?
We have very supportive families who help us a lot and give us the opportunity to focus on our music.

 So far what has been the proudest moment of your career?
The proudest moment of our career is being only the third Zimbabwean band to be selected for the World Music Expo showcase, something that has only been done by Oliver Mtukudzi in 1998 and Chiwoniso Maraire in 1999.


Where do you think your largest fan?
Our biggest fan base is in Zimbabwe but also spreading rapidly in Europe and other parts of the world.

What is the furthest show you have done from home?
The furthest performance we have done was the Voice of Nomads in Ulan-Ude, Buryatia in Russia or the Afrika Festival in Tampere Finland.


What has been the worst nightmare for the group & how did you get through it
Our worst nightmare as a band was being invited to perform at a New Year’s Eve party at Pamuzinda Safari Lodge. Just when we started out set, the racist owner started yelling abusive words because he did not want to hear African music. It turned out to be a big misunderstanding because the theme of the party was “Out of Africa” literary.  We just had to keep playing till the end but had learnt our lesson, never play there again.

If you could categorize your music, what genre would you it best fit?
Afro-fusion

Finally what do yall’ think of 7:30 Apparel?
7:30 Apparel is hot and funky gear, the way to go for all creative people who know what time it is.

K.arma, ahh. We so what we reap….We reap what we sow! we reap what we sow .The law of cause and effect. And we are all under this law…..

A couple dayz ago I got a chance to talk to a very popular HRE based rapper, K.arma and was able to uncover a lot of information about one of the best up and coming artists in the  game great noww!!!!……

How did you get your name? The name Karma is derived the law of itself; I’m a huge fan of esotericism

When did your career in music start? My career actually hasn’t started yet, im still to release my official album and mixtape as well, right now im just building the hype coz im still going to school
